A review of my year 2015

Hello dear visitors,
now that this year is about to end, I thought I would do a little review of my 2015 from the art side of things. I won't post every picture I made for each month, that'd be a little bit too much for one entry.
As I write I am not prepared and I am curious myself what I will find. So let's begin...

January

This year started kind of unique, because I was in Japan until January. Unfortunately it was a bad start too, there was some private trouble that gave me this gloomy feeling for a while. But this sketch here is one just for fun, that I made into my sketchbook. It was a granny in front of the supermarket who suddenly asked if I was an american. It sounded like she wouldn't be happy to see me, if I was from america...
I have a bunch more sketches that I made in Japan over here in my Tumblr.

February

The serious abs and arms lady was done in February! No matter where I posted it, people always only commented on the body. Some thought it's pretty badass, but many said I should make her more feminine. I still like her as she is, since I didn't give her this very muscular body on accident...

March

Wow...nothing but random stuff that I never finished, just like this one below.

April

Found some character designs and this one, wich is probably I did that month...

May

Probably the best one in May was my Alissa White-Gluz Fanart. Browsing my Tumlr archive I seemed quite busy or productive at that time and I also created my Twitch channel. I remember putting a lot effort into it and now I am not even streaming! Guess that's something I should put on my list for the next year.

June

Another month that looked quite productive and full of sketches like this one or the animal sketches.

July

Looks busy again! I did this spaceship design / digital painting that still remains in my portfolio. But I also sketched Dinosaurs and started with YouTube Tutorials, the first one being about re-designing dinosaurs.

August

Many portraits like these or the Angela Gossow portrait and this one too:

September

I was working on book illustrations for the Yamete project, did this commission here, this shotgun, a couple of sketches and WIP's, finished this character design and also this one:

October

Didn't find something better than the portrait of Elizabeth Banks for October. The rest was mostly random... Here's the portrait in steps!

November

Oh yes, it's the Sandra Bullock Portrait! It also looked like some people liked the tutorial, I'm really glad about that. There were also sketches and weapons that month. But I would still like to mention my little spirit boy and this one.

December

This month. The last thing there was, was the Mike Ehrmantraud Portrait, this time with pencil on paper and not digitally along with a timelapse video. But also this (OC) character Portrait, this spaceship, these kinve concepts and this environment here:

Conclusion

I think I did a good amount of work, though I never think it's really enough. And it seems like I was most productive in summer, but also winter wasn't lazy. Just in the first two months it seems like I have been stuck and spent too much time on things that shouldn't take that long, I think I remember how I was struggling with character rendering. But I solved it now, as my latest designs were pretty satisfying to me and without bigger problems in the workflow. That's a good thing.
So what's the plan for next year? The answer to myself is: Keep it up, make more YouTube videos and tutorials, use that damn Twitch channel and finally start streaming (especially since there's the creative channel now and no more restriction to game content percentage) and finally get somewhere with my art!

Spaceship over Skeglin

Good evening!
Yes, it's really me with a new entry! Now that Christmas is over, I have more time to work on my stuff again. I started with this one about one week ago but never got to finish it until today. Around Christmas is always such a busy time...

Pencil Drawing Timelapse Video

Good evening!
Now here comes the video to the Portrait drawing I posted three days ago (see the entry "Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) Potrait"). I decided not to add any audio comments this time, since there wasn't anything planned or something I really thought about to create this portrait. It's just something I do for fun and practice, when I should actually should be doing other things instead. But it's relaxing and we all need to relax some time, agreed?
Well I hope you like my video and that you'll take the time to watch it, it's not very long.
And if you do like it, maybe share, like and subscribe!
See you around guys!

Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) Potrait

Hello again,
it's been a while this time, you know the holiday season keeps me busy with other things recently. But I hope it'll be a little bit better with the weekend coming. At least I don't have big plans until christmas eve. So today I also didn't have much time to spend on drawing or painting, so I did a pencil drawing into my sketchbook. It's a character that you may be familiar with if you know "Breaking Bad" or "Better Call Saul" and he is one of my favorites. I recorded a video of my drawing process, but I am not sure yet if I will also add audio commentary or not. Because I don't really know what to say about a portrait drawing process. Though, if you have anything you would like to know or that you would like to hear about, please leave me a comment! This one took me about 45 minutes, also not sure if the video should be in real time or if that's boring...

Xzopilae Empire Forces (XEF) Knife Concept Designs

Good evening folks,
can anybody tell me why I am so tired today? At least I still got these knives done. Some slighty differ from the sketches but I think it's better like this and I am satisfied. Up to the next one (but not today)...

Salomis – Character Portrait

Good evening,
I am so done for today. But real quick just one blog entry before I go to have dinner. I finished the improved character portrait of Salomis (Warhammer 40K P&P RPG) from this over this to what you see above. But I also worked more on the character from yesterday and turned this into this:

It's for another RPG, Star Trek as you can see, though I have no idea. But whatever, I am so guilty of being a nerd. I want to call it "nerdist".

Just A Character

Hello,
another character, but I didn't put too much work into her (yet), because it had to be quick. I am okay with only the face being kind of what I imagined and will probably do some more on her, especially the clothing, some other day. But her name is Alex. Done in Photoshop with the help of a ZBrush model that I sculpted...

Xzopilae Empire Forces (XEF) Knife Concept Designs

Hello there,
here we go again, today I was in the mood to work a little more on my personal project (wich still doesn't have a name). This time I designed some knives for the Xzopilae Empire Forces.

If you want to see more of that, so far you can check out the XEF Guns and my Hilda (character).

Arctic Station

What kind of station is it? And why does it look so lost?
Is everybody staying inside because it's so frikkin' freezy cold outside or did something terrible happen? Or maybe just everybody is on holiday. Everything is possible.
Between start and end of this piece I had some break where I did my character model instead. But today felt like a good day to do it. Not too sure if I am done or if I'd like to detail and refine a bit more or maybe add something. Let's see tomorrow...

Character modeling in ZBrush – WIP 3 –

Good evening again,
today I was working on my model again. She has a shirt now and jacket and boots and... well below you can see why I always only show you screenshots from the face or upper body. She has no pants, that looks... interesting.

Character modeling in ZBrush – WIP 2 –

Good evening!
Guess I will never be satisfied with the hair but I think the rest is okay like this. Gonna keep it. Now I think I want to try on some clothes. But I don't promise anything, I am still learning ZBrush (that's why the struggles) and one of my problems – besides hair – are clothes. But I don't want to sculpt bald characters eternally...
Oh yeah, did I mention that this is Salomis? My Pen & Paper RPG character. She has a blog too, but it's in German.
See you around (hopefully)!

Krita test/review (Mac OSX)

Hello and welcome (back)!
Now the video that I was talking about in yesterdays's post is online for you to watch. Hooray!
In this video I am sharing my first impression on the art and digital painting/drawing software Krita with you. When I recorded this video, it was really the first time for me to open that program and I just got into it. Learning by doing, you know? So it's really a first look into the program and depending on the person, how quickly and easily (or not) this piece of software and it's environment can be understood.
Well I don't want to take anything that I'll tell you in the video anyway so, I'll just let you watch it now. Please enjoy!

PS: When I tested more programs (suggestions welcome), I might also do a text-based review here on my blog that compares all the programs I've been testing. So check back and like and comment, I'd be highly appreciated.

Character Sketch, trying Krita

Good evening, folks!
Today I just have this comic-ish sketch for you. It's actually supposed to be a character from the RPG that I joined, but I didn't put so much time in it, it was for a testing-purpose and really just a sketch.
Wonder what I was testing?
I'll tell you: Krita. You know that program that some digital artist may consider an alternative to Photoshop. It's a video and I plan to test other programs too. So I'll surely let you know here when the review is up and ready for you to watch.
If you want me to review or try something in particular, feel free to request that in a comment. Please Free/Demo programs only and they should be Mac compatible.

See you next time!

Snowy Environment – WIP –

Good evening,
here is today's work, as far as it got. It's a snowy Sci-Fi environment design, or at least it's supposed to become. Didn't have that much time to work anything today and tomorrow I'll be busy withother things too, so probably you'll see something new (or progressed) here on monday.

A Cozy Place

Heyllo everybody,

it's been a while since I did an environment the last time. But today I did this, not sure if it's finished though. I'll know tomorrow hopefully, because now I am tired and wanna lay around lazy.
Let me know what you think of it in the comments!

Spirit – Digital Painting

Good afternoon (yes)!

This one is for the "Artists Beyond Borders", this time the topic is "spirit". I totally wanted to make something creepy since a little while so this theme really fit my mood. So I took the spirit for a ghost and made this... happy child. And I hope to do some more horror themed things, I think it's really fun to draw/paint and it could – in my case – become some dark sci-fi!
Done in Photoshop as usual.

Alien – Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) Portrait

Hello, hello!
This was a fairly quick one. The black and white version took me about one and a half hours. Then I started to play around with "sexy" looking colors, because I was just thinking about these small undies...
Well, consider the black and white version as the "real" final piece, the colored one is just for fun because I wanted to do something with the undies.

B&W Portrait Tutorial

Finally it's done. The tutorial about the Sandra Bullock portrait that I uploaded two days ago! It took me quite a long time, like, I spent the most time of my day with putting together that tutorial. So I hope you'll think it's good. Another good thing is, that above in the navigation, there is a link to my tutorials now. There are not many tutorials yet (!), but maybe check it out. A thing that is not so good is that the tutorial-page looks kind of poor. Will it look better when there are more links? Or is there something I can do to make it look better now? I thought about preview images, but I didn't manage to arrange something nice looking with the possibilities that blogger.com has to offer.
If you have any feedback or ideas, please let me know. Also tell me if you have a request to make for the next tutorial(s).
See you soon, I'm going to the wasteland (if you know what I mean)...

Click on the image will lead you to the tutorial

Sandra Bullock Portrait

Good evening again,

today is a portrait, you could also call it fanart because you know...
Anyway, I hope you like it.
I am just guessing now, but I think it took me about 3 hours. There are still things that could be detailed more, but this is bout the level where I like to finish my pictures.
Reference photo is here.

Character sheet and how I did it (step by step tutorial)

Hello, hello everybody!
I am so happy that this is done now, it's going to be my new portfolio piece.
As I said in the WIP-post before, I took screenshots of the steps from start to finish of the character painting. And yes: I didn't forget doing it! Hooray.
People already asked me sometimes, if I can show my progress on a page, make tutorials or step-by-step explanations. Your ideas are always welcome and I appreciate them. I considered it a good idea and started with this.
I'll set up a page in the navigation soon, but for right now, I provide you with the link to the step-by-step page for this one in particular:

Hilda Character Design – WIP –

Hello and good evening,
sorry after my little time of absence (again) it's just a work in progress that I can come up with. But I am still saving the steps, so there is still hope for a step-by-step post of this work. Hooray!
The hardest part is done on this I guess, now it is about fine-tuning, adding details, more contrast, light and shadows, bounce and reflected lights and all that stuff. Especially I have to work on the materials and the face, but this time I am saving the face until the end. I used to say that in my YouTube videos, that I like to start with the face because it motivates me to do the rest. This time I wanted to try it the other way around. I admit that I am already a bit tired of detailing the body, but this time I still have the face to look forward to.

Alternate Armor Design (Hilda) – turnarounds –

Hello everybody,
Yes, it's been nearly a week since my last post. And no, it's not because I bought Fallout 4 and am wandering around in the wasteland all the time. I admit that I did that too, but I can hold back with it and was working on stuff. Somehow I happened to become unsatisfied with my latest armor design and was overthinking it all. Then sketched out a new idea, got in the mood to build a 3D model of it in ZBrush (what I did) and so I did a whole new design – except for the colors, those are still good in my opinion – and did a new character turnaround as you can see above. The helmet and weapons remain the same too though. Now I am working on a nicely (hopefully) rendered 2D Hilda. Also I am making screenshots of the progress so I can show them to you later. If I don't forget to take screenshots later, because I tend to do that...

Xzopilae Empire Forces (XEP) Weapon Concept Designs

Hello and welcome (back)!
Now the third design is done, for now that's all. Hilda should be finde with three weapons for now. Next image will hopefully be a finished character sheet of her. But for sure the it won't be a weapon again, promise.
Actually I am in the mood for a digital painting or illustration. By the way I am still working on my part for the Yamete-project, but that's not what I have in mind when I say I am in the mood for an illustration.

Okay, just for your information I'm also gonna post my 3D models of the weapons above. Here they are...

Hand Cannon Concept

Hello everybody,
obviously I decided to continue with another weapon. Maybe one more and then I'm just gonna add them together with some pouches and/or accessories to my Hilda character design.
This Gun is also done with a 3D model that I did in ZBrush, but it took about half of the time that I needed for the SMG because it adapts some of its elements. That made it much easier, since I didn't need to find a whole new design language.
Somehow I am very tired and feeling a little bit frosty today. I hope that means nothing and tomorrow will be all good again.
So hopefully see you tomorrow!

SMG – Final Render

Good evening, I am back.
With weapon designs. Actually this is just part of the character I am working on because I wanna add some pouches and equipment and stuff. I really got caught in this one and modelled and painted on it about 8 hours today. Okay, also ZBrush crashed a couple of times and I was pretty annoyed when I had to do things over and over again because I forgot to quicksave.

Anyways, tomorrow I'll continue with either the other props and weapons or with the character design itself.
See you next time!

SMG – Weapon Design Sketches

Hello folks,

some submachine-gun sketches today. That'll be for the character that I am working on as well, Now I am trying to build one of these in ZBrush. That may take a while so if you don't hear from me tomorrow it means I am still working on it and need some more time.
So see you hopefully tomorrow!
Have a good evening or whatever daytime it is for you (I love the Internet)!

Character Armor Design – helmet –

Good evening,

I am back again with helmets. The last missing part for the armor design, then I'll either show off some details or add some weapon(s) or some extra props. I am not sure yet but will figure it out eventually.
The visor might also be dark blue, but for now I decided for this turquoise that's pretty much popping out but maybe when I see it tomorrow I don't know what I was thinking when adding such a strong color.

Anyway let's find out and please check back tomorrow!

Character Armor Design – turnarounds –

Good evening!
Okay this is good, the turnaround for the character-sheet is done and it's colored. Next step will be a helm for the character. Her name is Hilda by the way. Hopefully the helmet will be done and up in this blog by tomorrow, because I am planning more. This will be nice, so please stay tuned and check back for more if you like this!

Character Armor Design – color variations –

Hello and good evening!

I was drawing all day and did the character turn-arounds and then tried around with colors. Out of eight variations, I combined some a bit and now the final three options are what you see on the image above.
For today I won't do anything on this anymore, but I'd like to hear your opinion. If you have a favorite, let me know in the comments below!

Thanks and see you soon!

Character Armor Design – work in progress –

Hello there,
today even more armor. I am drawing a turn-around so the character's clothes can be seen in four different angles. This may take a while. But probably the two fron views are the hardest part,  the backside will most likely have fewer of these plates (as here  on the legs, arms and shoulders). I kind of like this dark grey, but I will try around with colors later, I have a dark blue in mind. But also a light colored version could be interesting.

Hope to see you again next time and bye!

PS: I have to fix the collar on the left one, it's supposed to be highet like on the right sketch.

A lot of armor

Good evening,
today I was working on my next character. I did a couple of sketches into my sketchbook and now trying around with it in Photoshop. The different colors are each on a different layer and tell me what the material is. To be more specific, it's just telling me how hard or flexible and soft the material is. Green is har surface, for example.
